Compensating in maths is the procedure of giving an amount of numbers to make the other number tidy. For example: 78 + 80 = ???. I add 2 to 78 to round it to 80 then I add 80 to 80 which is 160. After that I subtract 2 from 160 which leaves me with 158. 158 is the answer.
In the slide show I showed six examples of compensating. I also made a number line as a visual example. Compensating is a faster and easier strategy rather than just adding an equation like '78 + 80' together.
