It's a Bit Dicey - LS1's 2018 Manaiakalani Film

LS1 contributes It's a Bit Dicey to the 2018 Manaiakalani Film Festival.

The Olympics are an example of many different kinds of people coming together to compete in the spirit of mutual respect, self improvement, and friendly competition. Everyone has the intent of being friendly, but people have put a lot of hard training into their performance. What might happen if there was a dispute?

The producers and writers of this movie have made a parody on old poorly dubbed kung fu movies to satirise a number of themes, but mainly certain behaviours that can be (although shouldn't be) expressed in high end competition.

As was the case for LS1's movie last year, learners were given a theme, then told to write a narrative. The best narrative was chosen to be made into a movie.

    1. Thank you Maanas. Yes, we were poking fun at how athletes often start fighting even though they are supposed to be better than that.

  2. Hey Panmure bridge school. Im Deavay from Pt. England School and I liked you movie. Its kinda funny how it went from minute to win it to fighting. There were little mistakes in the movie but that's ok. Are you gonna make another video like this and did you enjoy this

    1. Hello Deavay

All of the "mistakes" in the movie were made on purpose. As you can read in the post that accompanies the video, we made a parody. Parodies make fun of things. In this case the kind of movie we were making was an old kung fu movie, which often had little mistakes like the ones we deliberately put into our movie.

All of the kids involved in the movie worked very hard. As I wrote in the blog post, LS1 kids wrote the story as well. This was after learning about kung fu movies and parodies.

Because we were successful in getting our ideas out in this movie, one of the LS1 kids has asked to make a superhero comedy movie.

    1. Thank you for your positive comment, Lini.

Our movie was a parody of old kung fu movies, as I mentioned in the blog post. Those movies often had little mistakes, so we deliberately put those mistakes into our movie to have some fun. This shows we understand how to make movies and are poking fun at how serious people can get about making movies.

Poking fun at how movies are made was only one of the things we were poking fun at. I have already mentioned the other on the blog post.

Thank you for your comment. Not many people have understood that all of the "mistakes" in our movie were made on purpose because we are copying a specific movie style. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie.

  15. Hi LS1
I really liked how you made a comedic film about sportsmanship, I found the part where they start fighting the funniest. Although, I don't quite get the part where your subtitles say "Where's my pizza?".
    Great Movie!

    1. Hi Alex

You'll have to watch some old kung fu movies. You'll see that often the subtitles had a completely different story from the actual story. Many movies imported to different countries between the 60s and 70s were like this. Movie makers didn't think it was necessary to hire proper translators.

keep up the great work. from Aaron bye

    1. Thank you, Aaron

There is a trick to how we balanced the dice for the movie. For our actual Olympics, everyone had to balance the dice for real. For the movie it was too hard and took us too long, so we had to resort to using different tricks. Can you figure them out?

I really enjoyed this funny skit, the sound affects were on point including the camera angles. How long did it take to film this?

    1. Hello Sarah

We put a lot of different jokes and mistakes into this movie, so it took longer to film than normal. It took maybe the whole of term 3 to get it written, filmed, and edited.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. We were making a parody, as I explained in the blog post. We were making fun of the fact that some top level athletes get into fights with each other even though they are supposed to be better than that. It is a reminder that we should ALL be aware to avoid fighting because for the most part fighting is a stupid way to try solving issues.
