Going multimodal

Back on the 21st of November, Mr Wong's reading groups began trying out multimodal texts and developing learning skills to read and gather information across texts. The topic of learning was pioneering aviators.

The first three photos show the everyone making connections to themselves by first making news reporter interview questions to interview themselves about themselves...

The next step involved using a selection of those questions to find out information about either Jean Batten or Amelia Earhart using research skills taught by Mairi Ogilvie from the National Library.

This is the first time Mr Wong has tried this, so there are still some wrinkles to iron out. Mr Wong would like to thank Mrs Anderson from Learning Space 2 (Digital Footsteps blog) for helping with the planning.

General Knowledge

WALT: find information about the world around us. This year LS1 have been working on an independent task called General Knowledge. We choose one country every week to do general knowledge on. This task requires map skills, scan texts for key information and to make connections with different countries. It's fun to see the different cultures, and to learn about the interesting facts. Here are a few General Knowledge tasks finished by these following students.
Here is the website if you would like to try it yourself.

Tiava: Tonga

Jeremiah: United Kingdom

Angari: Germany

Forces On Flight

L.I. To investigate the forces of flight

Lift, drag, thrust and weight are the four forces on a flying object we have been investigating.  We have been note-taking, learning about how aeroplanes & helicopters work. He have also been looking at hot air balloons and birds. On a plane thrust must overcome drag to go forward, and lift must overcome weight to fly and be kept in the air.

Rocket Experiment - Inquiry

This term our topic is Flight. The past 4 weeks Mr Wong and Mr Ogilvie's group were learning about Flight and Migration. This week Mr Ogilvie's group are studying Rocket Science. We did an experiment using a balloon. About 7 metres of a fishing line was pinned from one end of the room to the other. We put a straw through the string for the rocket to fly. We then took a blown balloon and stuck it on the straw using clear tape. Mr Ogilvie used a clip to hold the end instead of tying it. Then we made our prediction then let the clip go, while the balloon pushed against the air to the other side of the fishing line. We did this experiment 3 times for each balloon (3 balloons). After that we made a graph showing how many metres each balloon went. Mr Ogilvie's group enjoyed doing the Balloon experiment.

Warriors Visit

This afternoon, Ryan Hoffman and John Palaui from the Warriors team came to our school for a special assembly. At the start of the assembly Alice from DTR, Jorja, Ryan and John had a self introduction. For Ryan and John's self introduction, they had to say their name, position they play in the Warriors and their favourite ice cream flavour. We then started our assembly by spinning a wheel with 4 categories we would do during the assembly. The whole school was divided into 2 teams; Ryan's team and John's team. We each had to choose a chant. For Ryan's team our chant was 'Hofy', and John's teams chant was 'JP'. Our first category was Trivia. For Trivia, we had to shout our team's chant and see who would be the loudest to answer each question. Our second category was Sleep. Like the previous round, we had to shout the loudest for our team to get a point. We had volunteers go up and collect prizes from Ryan and John. Our 3rd round was Hydration. We had students go up and read facts, then sit back down with prizes. Our last round was Belongings. We had to scream our team's chant to get to read and collect prizes from Ryan and John. To finish off our special assembly we took a photo with the whole school including Ryan Hoffman and John Palavi. Our school definitely enjoyed having 2 rugby players from the Warriors visiting our school.

T3 W4 Kiwisport

This week for Kiwisport, we focused on jumping. We learnt what we need to do when we jump with two feet. We needed to bent our knees when we land. First we had to warm up, so we played Octopus. Mr Ogilvie played with us, which made it even more challenging. Then we played our last game called Rock Paper Scissors. We were divided into 2 teams. There were spots spread out on the semi circle line. We had to win a game of Rock Paper Scissors to jump to another spot. Our goal was to jump to the other side's team. We enjoyed having Andie teaching us how to jump and having Mr Ogilvie play with us.

T3 W4 Kiwi Can

This week for Kiwi Can we have been learning about Problem Solving. First we played an energiser where Mr M had to show a number of fingers, and whoever got the correct number first wins. The year 6s were divided into 2 groups, then played against each other. We had lots of fun playing our energiser.  Then we did our first activity where we had to think of a problem that has happened. Then we did our last activity where we had to have groups of people doing a play about a problem that has happened then try to solve it.

Duffy Theatre T3

Today was the first day of term 3. In the last block, we had Duffy Theatre. First when the classes entered the hall the performers introduced themselves and who they would be playing during the show. The show was about a boy named Duffy who was on a mission to save a man named Bill from being killed in World War 2 .  However, Duffy does face consequences  during his time in the past. In the end he does help his friend Ruby, go to school and learn how to read. The show was very funny and was very creative.

Today the Y6s had Life Education. We talked about Self Esteem and the qualities of a good friend. We played a game where Nichole (Life Education Teacher) called out a number and we had to clap that many times. We had lots of fun playing. The Nichole, showed us a clip called Bonnie in the middle. We discussed what the emotions where in the clip.

Area multiplication

In LS1 today, we learned about area and how to calculate the size of the area using times tables. We did this by playing the Area Multiplication game, after Mr Wong taught us about area. In this game a player rolls dice to find numbers to multiply. They then have to draw the corresponding rectangle on grid paper. The winner is the player who gained the most area.

This game was able to help out several different groups of people in the class. Some of the class are practising skip counting, others are memorising their times tables, and everyone needed to learn about area. The challenge for everyone after playing the game was to see if anyone could figure out the area of a triangle. I wonder how many students used Google to find the method...

Kiwi Can Y6 W9

Today was the last lesson for Intergrity in Kiwi Can. We played many games and discussed why we should do Intergrity. We did a scene about a boy who didn't do intergrity while his dad was home alone. We learnt that you would get punished if you don't do Intergrity. I'm sure the Y6 students had lots of fun at Kiwi Can.

Term Topic: Our Global Neighbours (Asia)

Our topic this term is about our global neighbour. We are specifically researching about four countries in Asia, Thailand, Japan, China and India. Learning Space 1 and 2 have done a rotation for each country. Both classes have finished the rotation. We did many challenges like the Language, Food, Traditional Dress, Emblem, Flag, and Famous Person challenge. I'm sure many students from the learning spaces enjoyed doing Asia as our topic this term.

Learning Space Block Opening Ceremony

Yesterday LS1 did a DLO on the learning space block opening ceremony. We wrote a small recount and make a small collage on the side.
