Revisiting the times tables in different languages.

Today Room 9 revisited the times tables (3 times tables for most) and learnt them differently from previously. At first many thought it was boring, then they began to have fun, and ultimately they produced some great knowledge and some flashy DLOs!

Step 1: write and say... at least 10 times (boring; but there is no satisfaction without hard work), then get tested for accuracy.
Step 2: make the times tables out of rubber bands (groups) and ice-block sticks (items), then practise saying the times tables at speed.
Step 3: challenge each other to say the times tables with immediacy.
Step 4: make a DLO (Mr Wong originally said Google Drawing because that was easy, but some R9ers thought it was better as a Google Slide).

The DLO had to include:

  • the equations written in numerals
  • the equations written in words
  • the equations shown in pictures
  • the whole times tables spoken in English and/or another language.
Room 9 was told to choose the language they use at home or are most familiar with. Thanks to that we got Te Reo Māori, Tongan, and Burmese, among others. Daniel, Ofa, and Eric collaborated to make this one, Jasmine made this by herself, and Sa Kae did this with a little help from Jasmine for recording.

Disclaimer: Mr Wong knows there should be photos on this post to make it look interesting...they're coming.

Duffy theatre

Today we had visitors to do the Duffy show. We enjoyed the show with laughter and we loved the story about Seinna. They tought us about reading, and that rather than watching TV you could read a book. They had three rules, shout the answer out rather than putting your hand up, when they do the be quiet symbol you have to be quiet and also keep your bottom on the floor. They also tought us a valuable message about reading, the message was "reading is important". The best part was when Seinna finally started reading.

Room 9 Simple Machines Posters

Today room 9 started on poster of simple machines. Mr Wong split the class into three groups. The groups were A3 poster group, A4 information group and Vocabulary chart. The A4 information group had to make a poster of all the simple machines. They also had to put the definition, the definition in your own words, a image and what does it do. Here is an example of my poster. When we have finished you can do a different activity.

Run Jump Throw Kiwisport Week 9

Today room 9 went to run jump throw our kiwi sport for our fourth session. For our warm up game we played octopus. We played two games. On the second game I managed to tie first with Tiava and Mishaan. After that we practised our high jump on the court. We were practising the scissor kick. When our teacher for run jump throw thought we were ready we started to jump over the poles. There were two sets of poles. One set was for jumping with your right foot and the other one for your left foot. Jumping on my right foot first was easier than jumping with my left foot first. She then let us choose how high we wanted to jump.Me, Ofa and Tiava tried jumping from the highest point. Some people got three or two turns to jump but other people like me only got two turns.

Heart Foundation and healthy lunches

Today Rooms 5, 6, and 9 made wraps as a conclusion to the Heart Foundation's lessons on how to read food labels and learning what levels of energy, fat, sugar, dietary fibre, and sodium are healthy.

After preparation, students made their own wraps. Available ingredients were lettuce, tomato, carrot, shredded chicken, and tuna to name a few. Tortillas and wholewheat wraps were used to wrap up the ingredients and make a tasty lunch for today.

Room 9 especially needed the extra lunch today because we ended up having two sessions of Kiwisport!

Run Jump Throw/ Kiwisport

Today Room 9 went to our session of Run Jump Throw. That is our Kiwisport for now. Today we practiced our jumps and long jump. For our warm up game we played stuck in the mud. For stuck in the mud we had to walk for our first round, for the second round we had to jump and for the last round we had to skip. After stuck in the mud we started to practiced our long jump. The four main steps for long jump are bend your knees, swinging arms, look up and land on two feet. After we did that we played a game of Rock Paper Scissors. We had to jump on the pads and when the two people are on one pad next to each other they have a round of Rock Paper Scissors. The winner carries on jumping to the other pads and the loser goes to the back of their team line. At the end my team maneged to win.
